Typographic Design: Washington

It all started with a bit of color & visual cues…

A harmonious and natural color palette reflective Washington, the Evergreen state.

This unique cartographic design of the Evergreen state was carefully crafted using a creative configuration of culturally-charged phrases, words, and simple graphics to capture the essence of Washington.

Through typographic hierarchy, the viewer's attention is drawn to the most important and recognizable characteristics of Washington state, even though only a single family of type is used throughout the illustration. The simple yet harmonious color palette utilized in this illustrative map is both reflective of the state's heritage and geographic nature, as well as an effective tool in creating a sense of depth and contrast to in the graphic itself.

Although this typographic map is not 100% geographically accurate, this cartographic design of Washington is whimsical in design and reveals the cultural identify of the state. It was created for the sole purpose of relaying data and information beyond the typical purpose of a map.

This project, when completed, was shared with the Washington Tourism Alliance and offered for public use in 2012.
